I could have called this blog Incredible Kolkata-- after the city in India where I live, which is called a megapolis now, but in reality, like all other big cities with a history, is actually an incredible forest of mindsets that continually wrestle with each other for space, until they whither and die.
I could have called this blog Tolly Totally-- after the beat that I am involved with as part of my job-- chasing celebrities who appear on the screen. The film studios in my city are all set in a place called Tollygunge, and the whims, fancies and eccentricities of the people who are the prime movers there, are no different from those who work in Hollywood. Reason why the place is also often called Tollywood. But then, it's still quite a 'me too' suffix. Thanks to us, the media, though.
I could have called this blog Word of Mouth too, risking a copyright violation with The Guardian newspaper, who run a column on food and drinks by the same name.
I could have named this blog Canned, Damned, Shit... whatever.
But I chose turnstile. Because it has endless possibilities. It can lead you anywhere. I want to lead you anywhere-- all of you who care to read this blog. Anywhere, that I land in. In people's mind, at places, on exotic food street, my city-- everything.
This is the hardest part. Who am I? Is it defined by the job I do? Or the persons I interact with? Is my identity dependent on the books I read, the films I watch, the family I belong to, the circle I keep? Perhaps, the best thing would be to put my thoughts down. That's what I am. If you are interested in me, then read on.
And do let me know what you think about all those letters making a beeline on the other side.
